What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session in Calgary

May 1, 20255 min read

Most people spend more time worrying about their first therapy session than the session itself actually warrants. That is not a criticism. It makes complete sense. You are about to sit in a room with a stranger and talk about things you probably have not said out loud to anyone.

So here is what actually happens.

You will not be put on the spot

The first session is not a test. Your psychologist is not sitting across from you with a checklist, waiting to assign you a diagnosis. Most first sessions are a conversation, not an assessment. Your psychologist wants to understand what brought you in, what has been going on, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. You get to decide how much you share and how fast you go.

If you come in and say "I don't really know where to start," that is fine. That is actually a pretty common place to start.

You will be asked about your goals

At some point in the first session, your psychologist will ask what you are hoping to get out of therapy. This can feel like a hard question when you are in the middle of something difficult. You do not need a perfect answer. "I just want to feel less anxious" or "I want to stop having the same arguments with my partner" or even "I don't know, I just know something needs to change" are all legitimate starting points.

Your goals will likely shift as therapy progresses anyway. The first session answer is just a starting point.

The logistics are simple

At South Calgary Psychology Group, sessions are 50 minutes. You can come in person to our office at 23 Sunpark Drive SE in Calgary, or we offer virtual sessions across Alberta if that works better for your schedule. We direct bill most extended health plans, so you are not paying out of pocket and waiting for reimbursement.

You can book online through our website at any time. We offer same-week appointments, so you do not have to wait weeks to get started.

You might feel tired afterward

Therapy is work, even when it feels like just talking. A lot of people leave their first session feeling a mix of relief and exhaustion. That is normal. You just processed something, and that takes energy. Give yourself some buffer time after your first appointment if you can. A walk, a coffee, some quiet time before jumping back into your day.

You do not have to commit to anything after one session

Some people click with their therapist immediately. Some need a session or two to find their rhythm. If after your first session you feel like the fit is not right, you can say so. A good psychologist will not take that personally, and finding the right fit matters more than staying out of politeness.

You can learn more about our registered psychologists and what they specialize in before you book, so you have a sense of who you will be working with.

The hardest part of therapy is usually making the first appointment. Once you are in the room, most people find it is not nearly as scary as they imagined.
